Thor Wickstrom - A Short Bio

Thor Wickstrom - Biography

Thor Wickstrom paints outdoors on the streets of New York and in the Berkshires, using traditional materials - a field easel, wooden palette, oil paints and linen canvas. He creates realist landscape paintings, cityscapes and studio interiors that capture the natural light of the moment and the colors of the day. Whether painting the Brooklyn Bridge, the Lower East Side, Inwood Park in Upper Manhattan, or the green fields of Western Massachusetts, Thor returns to paint the places he loves. In the studio, Wickstrom's fondness for atmosphere and mood infuse his still lifes, figures, and interior scenes. Drawing inspiration from the old masters and from contemporary painters, Thor creates works that reflects his own distinct character and vision.
Born in 1960, Thor moved to New York in 1979 to study oil painting at the Art Students League with Robert Philipp, Julian Levy and Joseph Hirsch, among others. In 1984, he studied anatomy at the Ecole Des Beaux Arts in Paris with Jean Francois Debord. To better understand traditional oil painting technique, Thor has copied from masterpieces at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and at the Louvre in Paris. Offering his paintings for sale online, Thor sells to collectors around the world and accepts commissions for specific pieces.
